No Mistaking...

where you folks stand on this issue since I have been called a ''cheapskate, a backstabber, an inconsiderate neighbor, and I've been told I do not deserve my Beld discount. Why? All because you feel I am being disloyal to Beld, and to a degree you are correct. This was not an easy decision for us, but you have to realize in our minds it was more disloyal to our family to spend $300 more than we needed for a commodity that we seldom use. We were making it fine for $17.00 a month with AT&T Internet, which was extremely slow, until our needs expanded to our grandchildren. I hope this doesn't sound too harsh for I do not mean to be divisive but, when 'our company' got into the cable/internet business they did realize they were not the only server in the town. They must have realized that there would be competition and they would not covet l00% of the market. Who provided this service before Beld diversed and wouldn't they have been paying Beld, both then and now, for use of Beld's ethernet network? The Town issued a license to another provider and that creates a shared market. If the other provider is doing so well, why is he slashing his prices to the quick? The numbers Comcast has enlisted certainly do not sound worth the cost and effort.

By lin
you are brave at the very least

for using your name(if it is indeed)
and for sharing your justification and
right of choice to go for alternative
WWW/CATV.last time i checked we live in
America so you are entitled.why you would choose to share the details with anyone visiting this website is anyone's guess, but i have a thought.opening one's self to public
scrutiny in the hope that disclosure
of said issue would somehow move the community run and owned service provider either reconsider policy or in this case drop pricing is admirable
but self defeating.Comcast is a Giant
conglomerate that can afford on a short
term basis to absorb initial losses for long term gains in a market that is surprisingly pro-local provider friendly( big surprise there)in case it has been forgotten BELD was forced
by Comcast to negotiate for rights to broadcast NECN and town residents finally are able to receive for an alternative news outlet.nobody including us want to pay more for the same service provided elsewhere by
people who care little for our community and only want its subscriber
fees.have you tried to reach Comcast directly with any concerns regarding
service or programing?would BELD feel threatened enough by competition to resort to unsavory methods in order to fatten its bottom line for shareholders
who live all over the east coast at your expense?every one in town knows where BELD offices are and their business hours are such that anyone can reach them easily enough. good luck to you Lin.i hope it works out for your
family.you have guts.I'll give you that. happy holidays

Life Before Comcast

If memory serves me, we used to have a single cable provider (Adlephia?)that didn't treat us very well when it came to cable service. I recall a time that they broadcasted the Spice Network toall of the homes in town during the day. When BELD was creating their fibre optic network around town, they felt that they could get more bang for the rate payer's buck by leveraging the new network that was going to service the Electrical network to include Broadband and cable.

This created the competitive environment which has brought many benefits to the town. I can't remember all of the players but I know that Comcast has come to town by gobbling up all of the other operators, which is their business model.

BELD realized that they needed to retain a certain percentage of the market to meet the infrastructure costs and I am sure that Comcast is aware of this as well. If BELD was to go under or give up the cable business, who would compete with Comcast and how does that benefit you? To my knowledge, there are no line costs to the providers as they both maintain their own networks within the town.

The $300 dollars that you are saving today can be put to a good use for sure however, I wonder if it is really a good investment for the long term.
