SUGAR LAND, Texas. Sugar Land Police will be doubly focused on highway safety during the upcoming Christmas and New Year holidays, Dec. 22 – Jan. 2, 2006.
The department is joining with state agencies and police and sheriff's departments throughout Texas in their ongoing statewide initiative to enforce speed limits and the state's DWI law.
The state awarded Sugar Land Police a $15,000 Selective Traffic Enforcement Program grant that includes a 10% local match to help fund the local program. The grant will increase the visibility of traffic officers on major thoroughfares.
“Speed is a major factor in 39% of car crashes occurring in Sugar Land,” said Sgt. Trever Nehls, traffic unit supervisor. “And in the past year, most of the intoxicated drivers were stopped on the City’s major thoroughfares.”
“We plan to do everything possible to prevent citizens from losing their lives or endangering others on one of our streets or highways,” said Nehls. “Motorist safety is a priority year-round, but we are especially watchful during holiday seasons.”
For more enforcement information, contact Sgt. Nehls at 281-275-2512.
