November 5, 2002
The Honorable Lori Nance Parrish, Chair
Broward County Board of County Commissioners
115 South Andrews Avenue, Room 421
Fort Lauderdale, Florida 33301-1872
Dear Commissioner Parrish:
Subject: Recommendation from the October 28, 2002 Broward County Municipal
Services Advisory Board
At its October 28, 2002 meeting, the Municipal Services Advisory Board (MSAB) voted to forward the following motion to the Broward County Board of County Commissioners for its consideration:
MOTION: The Municipal Services Advisory Board unanimously recommends the Broward County Board of County Commissioners include in its 2003 legislative package proposed legislation that transfers all powers of annexation and deannexation to the County level.
DISCUSSION: At the Board?’s October 28, 2002 meeting, State Senator Steven Geller, Chair, Broward County Legislative Delegation, discussed the political situation in Tallahassee and the opposition Broward County?’s annexation bills face there. Given the current situation, Senator Geller was unsure if full annexation would occur in Broward County by 2005, or even 2010. The MSAB feels annexation should be controlled by the people most affected by it, and not by elected officials from other parts of Florida. Accordingly, the MSAB requests the County Commission assume responsibility for annexation in Broward County.
Thank you for your consideration of this request.
Sincerely,
Eugene Franklin, Chair
Municipal Services Advisory Board
