Believe it or not, there are three places with the name Buechel. Which one are we?
We're the Buechel Terrace neighborhood which is located around the Buechel Public Park and Watterson Elementary School.
Our houses and streets were constructed from about 1950 to 1955. Many of our houses were known as "Gunnison Homes" for the company that developed their design.
The streets nearest to Breckenridge Lane were originally named Frederick Estates. Back then, that section of Breckenridge Lane was named Frederick Lane.
Today, our Buechel Terrace Neighborhood Association is actively involved in zoning, drainage, public safety, recreation, and other public concerns.
Immediately to the west of our neighborhood is the unincorporated Buechel, which was named for John Buechel about 1885. He operated an hotel on Bardstown Pike (now Bardstown Road) that eventually became a local landmark. The main thoroughfare through Buechel is the old Bardtown Road. This stretch of road was once known locally as "the Miracle Mile" for its shops, stores, and restaurants.
There are two streets in this area with the name Buechel --- Buechel Avenue and Buechel Bank Road.
We’ve recently learned that the name “Buechel” comes from Germany and Switzerland; where it’s spelled “Buchel.” There is a town by that name in Germany located near Wiesbaden and Frankfurt.
Across Bardstown Road from Buechel is the City of West Buechel. This city includes neighorhoods and a large shopping center orginally named Bashford Manor Mall for the famous thoroughbred horse farm.
Our monthly meetings are the 3rd Tuesday each month; 7pm at the Buechel Volunteer Fire Department. Everyone is welcome.
While you're waiting for our next meeting, here are a few details about the Buechel area we think you'd find interesting. This comes from City-Data.com.
