Burton Ridge Neighborhood Association

This area was annexed to the City of Vancouver January 1, 1995.

The driving force behind the associations formation was the concern that all our green space would disappear due to the development in the forested area to the south, and the preservation of some of this forest. Through hard work we had an agreement with one developer to purchase 4 lots in his development. Through much hard work, the Burton Ridge Association raised funds to purchace these lots.

The neighborhood association is also involved in maintaining the livability of Vancouver, one example is on going efforts to improve Burton Rd. and to monitor development, keeping the city council aware of our concerns and wishes.

An article from The Columbian gives a historical account of the early days of the Burton Ridge Association:

BURTON RIDGE WINS BATTLE TO SAVE FIR TREES

VANCOUVER - A stand of 150-foot Douglas firs in the Burton Ridge neighborhood will continue to stand.

The city of Vancouver opened an escrow account at First Independent Bank Monday and deposited $100,000, enough to purchase four parcels where the trees have grown for a century, said Ted Gathe, city attorney.

The trees were saved by a grass-roots money-raising campaign run by the Burton Ridge Neighborhood Association. Of the $25,000 needed, $20,000 was a loan from First Independent Bank. The remainder came from a combination of families pooling their money to buy "Heritage Trees" for $1,000 each, other people donating what they could, and group bake sales, a block party, garage sales and an ice cream social.

The loan package was put together with the help of Terry Sable, First Independent vice president and manager of the downtown branch; City Manager John F. Fischbach, and the Vancouver Parks and Recreation Department, said David Kenny, First Independent vice president.

Because the $25,000 was raised before a Tuesday deadline, the city matched the seed money with a $75,000 contribution.

Had the money not been raised, the trees would have been felled as part of an 8.7-acre, 47-home subdivision approved for the north side of Northeast 18th Street near Northeast 102nd Avenue.

Gathe said the city has notified the owner and developer, Tim Ralston, that terms of the purchase agreement had been met and the money deposited. When Ralston obtains final plat approval for the development, the city can take possession of land, he said.

Gathe said the property will likely remain as undeveloped open space.
