  • Respect-O-Meter: Respected Neighbor

I believe the key here is to communicate with your neighbors when you see suspicious activity in your neighborhood. Even if you don't have a civic association, it is important to talk with your neighbors, get to know each other, and have a genuine concern for your neighborhood safety.

There are a lot of ways to deter theft and burglary, but the main one is COMMUNICATION.

Below is some information on starting a Watch Group. The info is provided by USA on Watch website:  http://www.usaonwatch.org/

Register a Watch

Register Your Watch Group in 5 Easy Steps

  1. Recruit and Organize as many neighbors as possible
  2. Contact your local law enforcement agency and schedule a meeting
  3. Discuss community concerns and develop an action plan
  4. Hold regular meetings and train
  5. Implement a phone tree and take action steps

The first step is talking to your fellow neighbors about starting a group. The next step is contacting your local law enforcement agency. Invite them to meet with your group at a time and place convenient for your Watch Group. It is essential for your group to work in collaboration with law enforcement because Neighborhood Watch is a cooperative effort. If law enforcement is unavailable to come to the first meeting you might want to have a meeting to discuss the concerns and issues in the neighborhood. Your group should create a plan on how to work towards lessening the impact of the top 3 concerns of neighbors.

There are wonderful resources that you can use to guide you on the site. You can print out a Neighborhood Watch Manual and brochures from the publication library. These materials will help you create and develop a Neighborhood Watch.

When you register your watch group you can choose to receive an Action Pack that has great information on building a watch group, meetings, and much more. The materials will give you more to work with as you build your Watch Group. Also, register to receive the newsletter that contains stories and information on what others are doing in their Groups.

As for stickers and signs you need to ask your law enforcement official about them or can purchase them through a number of vendors. The National Sheriffs’ Association does have a brochure that contains products but we recommend you to coordinate with law enforcement first.

What are some of the benefits of starting a Watch Group?

  • Partnerships with Law Enforcement and your Neighbors
  • Reduction in Crime
  • A More Secure and Better Prepared Hometown
  • A More United Community
  • Improved Communications

Burglary Prevention Month

June is Burglary Prevention Month, so it's a great time to take steps to make your home safer. Here are 4 tips to get you started:

  1. 1.Always lock all your doors and windows when you leave the house (even those on upper floors).

  2. 2.Think about installing motion-sensor lights around your home.

  3. 3.Keep any ladders locked up so they can't be used by burglars.

  4. 4.When you go on vacation, make sure your home does not look like you're out of town. For example, keep your car in the driveway and your lawn mowed while you're traveling.
