Breaking New Ground
The Arizona Elder Fraud Prevention Team is breaking new ground in the fight against fraud that swindles the elderly. Formed in November 1998 as the result of a joint effort of the U.S. Department of Justice and AARP, the Arizona Elder Fraud Prevention Team carries out a strategy to coordinate the efforts of state and federal law enforcement agencies, as well as private organizations that help prevent fraud targeting seniors.
Members of the Team include the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Arizona, the Arizona Attorney General's Office, members of the Arizona Telemarketing Fraud Task Force (FBI and Postal Inspectors), Secret Service, HHS, Veterans Affairs, Federal Trade Commission, AARP representatives, the Better Business Bureau and representatives from the Securities Division of the Arizona Corporation Commission and the U.S. Securities Exchange Commission.
The team has developed a multi-strategy approach to accomplish its purpose. The Team held public forums on telemarketing fraud, investment fraud, and health care fraud in Arizona towns, including Kingman, Prescott, Sierra Vista, Yuma, Mesa, Tucson, and Phoenix. It has made presentations to the Northern Arizona Council of Governments - Area Agency on Aging Elder Issues Conference. The Team also sponsored the largest anti-telemarketing fraud public education campaign in Arizona history, Operation Intercept, in 1999. Additional partners joined that effort, incluing the Arizona Cardinals Football Team, CellularOne, Basha's Supermarkets, and KAET-TV, the PBS station at Arizona State University. . .☺
