The Calahan Homes Community became a subdivision in the late 1950's. A new track of homes was started in 1960 and by 1968 the entire area bounded by Florida, Pierce, Jewell and Wadsworth was completed. At that time, it wasn't unusual to have neighboring cattle walk through newly planted lawns and to hear roosters crowing each morning. Calahan Homes was about as far west as the urban sprawl had gone. Wadsworth Blvd. was a mere two lane road with no businesses along side of it. Not until the mid 1960's did a supermarket and drug store occupy the corner of Wadsworth and Jewell.
Many of the homes sold in the 10 to 12 thousand dollar
range. The residents of Calahan Homes have always taken pride in their community.
Many of the original homeowners still live in the neighborhood having expanded their original 1,000 square foot dwellings to more spacious and comfortable homes.
Families find The Calahan Homes Community a good place to raise their children. The Calahan Awareness Group, Inc. has enhanced the quality of life in the community.
The Calahan Awareness Group, Inc. is an organization designed to promote a safe, good looking, friendly community. In conjunction with our Neighbhoor Watch Program, everyone, homeowner and renter alike is encouraged to join in keeping the neighborhood a special kind of place in which to live.
