A Cell Phone Antenna on Walgrove

Posted in: Mar Vista Community Forum
Cingular Wireless, an expanding cell phone company, is seeking approval for installing an antenna & telecommunications facility in the tower of the New Life Church at 1935 Walgrove Avenue. The Office of Zoning Administration has set a hearing for 10:30 AM on May 9th.
I seem to remember that this issue of installing a cell phone antenna and facility has come up previously in the Mar Vista area. Can someone please recall what happened at that time or come up with general information on this type of installation in a residential area? Walgrove Avenue defines the western border of our territory. People residing in proximity of the installation are concerned.

Cell Phones : not all good.

This is another example of technology racing forward without responsible consideration to the consequences.
About 1 or 2 years ago, a group of concerned neighbors from the NorthWestdale area fought the installation of microwave station off the corner of Natinal and Barrington. We put enough pressure on them that they withdrew.
Protesters defeat Cell Tower

Cingular Wireless' proposal to install a base station including antennas on the roof and inside an extended church tower on Walgrove Avenue at Vienna Way is expected to be rejected by the Planning Office hearing officer.

The neighborhood was strongly opposed to the proposal. vb.
Community opposition effective.

It is expected that as a result of united, organized and well orchestrated grassroots opposition to the project Cingular Wireless will withdraw its application and the hearing officer will close the hearing. This is the position as of the end of June, 2002.
