PAST
A hundred years ago, cattlemen wound their way out of San Antonio on the Chisholm Trail, bound for the cattle markets in Kansas. Shortly after they departed Old San Antonio, their trail took them along what is now IH-35, and past the land we now know as "Camelot".
SUBDIVISION DEVELOPMENT:
At its inception as a residential subdivision, Camelot I was considered to be "out in the country," and was an area not yet annexed by the City of San Antonio. After annexation (starting in 1964), interest in the area grew for those individuals working at nearby military installations, and eventually, commercial development followed along Walzem Road.
Camelot was one of Ray Ellison's (a local developer) first subdivisions; and, like his others, is based on several standard floor plans in addition to some early custom variations. Many current homeowners are original owners.
PRESENT:
Housing within the Camelot subdivision consists of 827 single-family dwellings, 86 duplex units, 15 townhouse units, and four apartment complexes consisting of 698 units.
A major advantage to living in the subdivision is the presence of great NEISD schools, all of which are within easy walking distance from any point in the subdivision. The close proximity to Fort Sam Houston and Randolph Air Force Base have resulted in a significant number of military home owners with several families retaining ownership during their military careers and returning to reside in Camelot upon their retirement.
CAMELOT I NEIGHBORHOOD ASSOCIATION:
Camelot I Neighborhood Association (CINA) was formed in March 1989 by residents concerned with the on-going commercial development of vacant land within the subdivision's boundaries, and the impact that development will have on the drainage systems for the subdivision and the deterioration of its streets.
The purpose of the association, relative to this plan, is to educate the residents on the need, purpose for, and utilization of the Code Compliance Department, Zoning Commission, and Police and Fire Departments; to further resident involvement in our own Neighborhood Watch patrol system, and the interrelationships and use of other city departments.
In addition, CINA will be the primary force available and willing to implement the components of their neighborhood plan to resolve problems identified and benefit the residents of the planning area by maintaining the "quality of life" that currently exists.
