I brought this up on the marketplace board as well but wanted to start a discussion. I was told that the HOA won't spray common areas unless someone gets sick with the virus.

That's very dissapointing to me. I went on walk to a park on castlegate blvd and still got eaten alive even with bug spray on myself. I saw other people irritated by it, too.

I might not be able to make it to an HOA meeting depending on my husbands schedule but just wondering if anything can be done about it. I am sure it has been discussed before.

Parts of that are true, but the important parts are not.  The county will spray for free, but only after a positive test of a mosquito for the west nile virus.  The HOA can spray, but it is VERY costly...and by VERY costly, I mean like the amount of money an average neighbor here in this community might take home after working two weeks.  That doesn't mean the HOA wont do it though.  I will bring it up at the next meeting.

Yes, mosquitos are a problem here for about 3 weeks in the summertime unfortunately.  There's an area behind the subdivision that holds water and thus increases our mosquito population and for YEARS (5+) homeowners that back up to that area (which are the Great Western homes I believe) have complained to the county and nothing is ever done because the county will not spray until there is a positive case of West Nile (not a person per se, but bird or other animal as well) which as far as I know hasn't happened yet which is the reason that area never gets sprayed by the county (which is county land).

So, given that the problems come from other areas I'm not even sure that spraying our common areas would help much.

My best advice would be to say take your walk before 6:00 or so or after 8:30-9:00 in the evening and before 5:30 or so in the morning or after 7:00 or so in the morning.  And get a good bug spray something with Deet if you can find it.  Off typically makes the best products and I usually don't have a problem if I'm wearing that.  If you can't do those times or you still have issues even with bug spray then maybe take your walks away from the grassy areas.  Staying on the sidewalks and away from the grass will help immensly.

Good luck...on the bright side it's usually only a problem for 3 maybe 4 weeks at the most and then it seems to disappear.
