Code Corner: Barking Dogs

If the sound of a neighbor?’s barking dog is disturbing your peace of mind, the Animal Care Division encourages you to speak personally with your neighbor to let them know their pet is creating a disturbance.

Pet-owners are often unaware there is a problem and this small gesture can go a long way towards promoting and maintaining good relationships with your neighbors.

If, after contacting your neighbor, you find you still need assistance, a complaint may be filed with the Animal Care Division, provided an exact address for the animal, a descrip?¬tion of the dog and the general time the barking occurs is given.

Staff will then research city records for prior complaints. If none are found, an official warning will be mailed to the address advising the residents that a possible ordinance vio?¬lation has occurred. The warning states that steps must be taken to correct the problem and prevent future incidents. The warning also informs pet-owners about possible fines if they are issued a summons and are convicted in court. Only one warning per residence is given within a 12-month period.

If a prior warning has been filed, the person who filed the complaint along with an addi?¬tional neighbor from another household (because law requires you to have two people witness the same barking incident) must sign the complaint at the Aurora Animal Shelter located at 15750 E. 32nd Ave. Both parties must be willing to appear in court.

If the person filing the complaint can?’t find another willing to take action, an animal care officer, if available, may be dispatched to the address to hear the disturbance and act as a second witness.
