A local bird expert states that what we are seeing in Dec. 2006 is most certainly Great Blue Herons as the Yellow Crowned Night Herons aren't here in the winter.
Best way to tell the difference is the color of their bill. Great Blue's have light bill and Yellow Crowned have dark bill.

seen in June. These have red throats, eyebrows and breasts and are similar in size to sparrows. They are descended from caged birds released in N.Y. in the 1940's.
