school bond comm. meeting thurs.

Posted in: Circle C
The comm. formed to recommend items for the upcoming school bond election will be meeting with area residents at 6:30 PM Thursday, Feb. 26 at Small Middle School.

Currently the committee is recommending $ to purchase land for a new SW middle school (Tract 101 at the corner of Slaughter and 1826) but no $ for construction of the actual school. This could put the opening of the school a dozen years away when it will clearly be needed sooner. Some simple research shows that AISD's projections for 2007 enrollment #s for SW area schools are already met by actual enrollment #s TODAY.

Please do your best to attend this important meeting! Here is AISD's press release on these meetings:

AISD Citizens?’Bond Advisory Committee to Seek Community Input
The Austin School District's Citizens' Bond Advisory Committee will hold four public forums to receive community input on a proposed bond initiative.
The public is encouraged to attend the forums, which will be held on:

* Tuesday, February 17, 6:30 p.m., at McCallum High School, in the cafeteria, located at 5600 Sunshine Drive

* Thursday, February 26, 6:30 p.m., at Small Middle School, in the cafeteria, located at 4801 Monterey Oaks Blvd.

* Tuesday, March 2, 6:30 p.m., at Mendez Middle School, in the theatre, located at 5106 Village Square.

* Thursday, March 4, 6:30 p.m., at Martin Middle School, in the cafeteria, located at 1601 Haskell.

The CBAC is a group of 19 Austin citizens, appointed by Austin School Trustees in January 2003, to develop recommendations for a 2004 Bond proposal, including new facilities and facility improvements. The Committee is chaired by John Blazier, Sheryl Cole and Vincent Torres.

The CBAC is scheduled to make its recommendations to the Board of Trustees in March. The anticipated bond election would likely be held in the fall. Citizens will be allowed to speak in the order in which they sign-up, beginning at 6:15 p.m. at the site of the forum. Those who have thoughts on the bond initiative, but will be unable to attend the public forums, may email their comments to pturner@austin.isd.tenet.edu.
