The city has funding to build a new series of Hike & Bike trails, with a sizeable sum of money targeted for the Propostion 2 land that is west of Circle C Ranch.
One of the requirements to secure that money and to begin building the trails, is organize a group of volunteers who will help to monitor the trail system. Rules for use are being developed right now and our HOA board is going to request direct trail access from Circle itself. (The current plans only have one public access point, which would be from the entrance off of FM 1826 where it crosses Slaughter Creek.
Most of us feel that we should have access from La Crosse Avenue, as well. There is plenty of room to park along La Crosse and no homes are directly on it, by design. But, more importanlty, we want the trail access to be close to the new Elementry school.
This is a great project to get involved with. This is something that adds tremendous value to our community and a lot of intangible value, as well.
The trail system will be extensive, it will allow for horses, as well as hikers and cyclist. The properites have already had 2/3's of the cedar trees removed and prairy grasses have been planted. The city and the conservationists want a lot of trails built, but they haven't committed to connecting those trails to the Circle C trails (which are just starting to take shape).
There is a concern that direct access from the Circle C (soccer) park might be bad for the trails on the Prop 2 land. Also, there are still families living on the property, north of the creek, so I don't think we will see trails in that area, at least, not at first.
Just a few weeks ago, Stratus properties donated even more land to the Prop 2 acreage and you may have noticed new fencing and gates that have gone up along Slaughter Lane.
Please consider volunteering some of your valuable time to help us take care of this very valuable resource. It's going to be the model for other Prop 2 land and even new hike and bike trails throughout SW Austin. After all, that's OUR land. It was purchased with OUR tax dollars to protect OUR water supply (The Edwards Aquifer).
