The Clark Park Neighborhood is comprised of two 1950's sub-divisions, Campus Homes from the south side of 13th Street through the north side of 17th street, and from Farmer to Roosevelt. University Homes starts on the south side of 17th street through 19th street and from Farmer to Roosevelt.
We have been conducting oral history interviews with long time residents to preserve the stories and history of our community. if you know of someone, please contact us!
Campus Homes was Del E Webb's first residental sub-division in Maricopa county and either the 1st or 2nd in the state.
A grand opening celebration was held in June of 1953 to showcase the 6 models available. Over 10,000 people came to see the new homes being offered. The prices ranged from $7,500.00 for the Harvard to $10,200.00 for the Dartmouth. The first homes were finished in January of 1954. Several of these original home owners are still here, we also have 2nd and now 3rd generation Campus Homes owners. By the end of 1955 Campus Homes was built out.
Campus Homes has been featured on www.modernphoenix.net and is considered "Historically Signifigant" being the 1st tract housing in Tempe, even though when we were built Tempe only went to 14th Street!
University Homes had 3 phases and started in 1956. Norman McKinley who had been Del Webb's superintendant was the developer/builder of Univerity Homes.
The first phase started out at $10,750.00 for 1247 Sq. Ft of living space. With $1,500.00 down and FHA financing available, your monthly payment including taxes was about $81.25!
The final phase was completed around 1959. University Homes is a typical Arizona, 1950's ranch style neighborhood.
