Colonial Park Arts & Recreation Effort (CARE) was formed in 1982 to put our city officials, police department and neighorhood criminal elements on notice that the residents would no longer tolerate drug and alcolol abuse and all that goes with it in Colonial Park. It became evident during that first meeting that what the children wanted and needed was "something to do." CARE set out to provide alternatives to drugs and alcohol and vandalism for our children and young people, always mindful of everyone's rights. Some are as follows:
Mural designed by children painted on clubhouse by neighborhood children and parents solved graffiti problems and instilled feelings of job and neighborhood pride.
Fundraisers raised funds for sports equipment, games, supplies for activities such as the annual Easter Egg Hunt, Christmas Celebration/Caroling, annual pot luck dinner honoring our Senior citizens, honoring neighbors who have passed on by placing their names on a special Memorial Plaque.
Colonial Heights Library in its present location due to suggestions by CARE and many hours of involvement by CARE members on the project, the result being a place in the library to hold CARE meetings.
Replacement of lost flag pole in Colonial Park where CARE flies it's own flag alongside the American Flag donated by Congressman Robert Matsui which flew over the nation's capitol.
Coed softball program enables children to play softball. Any child who wants to plays regardless of their financial situation.
Mentor program enables youth to earn money working with children and in the park. Very successful and rewarding. The experience and participation in the Mentor program enable the young people an opportunity to use the experience on applications for work and increases feeling of accomplishment and self worth.
Monthly newsletter for over 10 years. CARE is dedicated to doing what is necessary to help provide a safe, clean, crime free environment for all who live here. Everyone is welcome to participate in all meetings and activities and it is CARE's hope that any good that is done will positively influence surrounding areas and be an example of what can be done by a few neighbors determined to improve their quality of life.
