Gazette Metro Letter

Some of you at the bus stop wanted a copy of this article. Here it is:

Gazette Wed., August 22, 2001 Letters/Metro Section
TAXING DISTRICT
Entire city should pay
for Powers Improvements

The Gazette's August 13 news report on Powers Boulevard was very thorough and yet no mention was made of the fact that the Metex Metropolitan District is paying for the Powers improvements (''Access an issue in planning changes to Powers,'' Metro). Anyone owning real estate in the district has their tax increased by approximately 30 percent each year (Metex tax rate - .01834). They must raise more than a million dollars annually to pay for the bonds that paid for the Powers improvements. This so 48,000 vehicles a day from all over Colorado can use the road.

A special assessment or improvements district normally applies to a confined area and benefits the landowners in that area. Powers should have been a general improvement project and its cost shared by the whole city and county.

I'm surprised some lawyer hasn't started a class-action suit to correct this.

There may well be other districts with the same unjust tax, but it's not too late for the authorities to step up to the plate and do the right thing. And no, the Metex tax does not effect me.
