Gravel Pit

On the west side of I-25 just south of
Baptist Road, there is a gravel pit.
The owner of the gravel pit, Raymond Dellacroce wants to expand the pit from 14.6 acres to 64.8 acres. On 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 20, 1999, at 27 East Vermijo, the El Paso County Planning Commission is going to decide whether Mr. Dellacroce should be able to expand his gravel pit. I am going to attend that meeting and argue that the expansion is contrary to the Tri-Lakes Comprehensive Plan, in that it does not protect the unique beauty of the front range. If anyone is interested in this issue, they should join me at the meeting.

Gravel Pit and Duncan Bremer

Today, I talked to our County Commissioner, Duncan Bremer, about his
position on expansion of the Dellacroce Gravel Pit, which is located just west of I-25 and just south of Baptist Road. Commissioner Bremer told me that he lives on a piece of land that adjoins the Gravel Pit. He would not tell me how he intends to vote on matter when it comes in front of the County Commissioners on August 25, 1999. I doubt if Commissioner Bremer is going to oppose expansion of the Gravel Pit, so I
suggested that he should abstain from voting on the issue since it might
appear that he has a conflict of interest on the matter. He was not
receptive to my suggestion.

I informed Commission Bremer of the charade of a Hearing that the El Paso County Planning Commission conducted on this matter last week (I will soon send you an email explaining the farce that occurred and how the Planning Commission approved the expansion of the Gravel Pit), however, he wasn't overly concerned. He suggested that if anyone wants to lobby the County Commissioners, they should send a letter to County
Commissioners, 27 East Vermijo Avenue, Colorado Springs, CO 80903. They will then make copies of your letter and forward one to each Commissioner. You can also call the Commissioners at 520-6444. Commissioner Bremer seemed very willing to talk to me.

Commissioner Bremer also told me that he has heard from landowners near King Soopers that Wal-Mart is interested in purchasing their property. However, he does not believe that Wal-Mart has yet contacted El Paso County for permission to build a store. Commissioner Bremer said that the land on the south side of Baptist Road is controlled by El Paso County. He said that the land on the north side of Baptist Road is in the Town of Monument. He opined that if Wal-Mart wants to put their store on the south side of Baptist Road that they will probably ask the
Town of Monument to annex them into Monument. We should contact Monument to see if they have yet heard from Wal-Mart.

Gravel Pit Hearing

At 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 26, 1999, the El Paso County Commissioners will hold a Hearing on whether or not to approve the request by the Dellecroce brothers to expand the use of their gravel pit for another twenty years. The Hearing will be held in the Hearing Room on the third floor at 27 East Vermijo Street, Colorado Springs.
