The ''Memorial'' in Memorial Day has been ignored by too many of us who are beneficiaries of those who have given the ultimate sacrifice. Often we do not observe the day as it should be, a day where we actively remember our veterans who have given the ultimate sacrifice. It is just one day out of the year to honor our loved ones, our ancestors, our friends who died in conflicts and wars -- not to honor war, but those that died in those conflicts and wars.
Please take the time on May 31st to do one or all of the following:
by visiting cemeteries and placing flags or flowers on the graves of our fallen heroes.
by visiting memorials.
by flying the US Flag at half-staff until noon.
by flying the 'POW/MIA Flag' as well (Section 1082 of the 1998 Defense Authorization Act).
by participating in a ''National Moment of Remembrance'': at 3 p.m. to pause and think upon the true meaning of the day.
by renewing a pledge to aid the widows, widowers, and orphans of our fallen dead, and to aid the disabled veterans.
by attending your local Memorial Day Parade on May 31st. The parade starts at 2 pm. It will begin at 4th & Wisconsin Ave. And winds down the Avenue to Prospect Ave. North to Mason Street, East to Lake Dr, past the War Memorial and ends at Veterans Park. As it makes its way in front of the War Memorial, all units will be identified from the Reviewing Stand. Following the parade their will be an Honor Ceremony at the Reflecting Pool. When the ceremony is completed, everyone is invited to make their way to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial where the 7th Annual National POW-MIA balloon launch will take place. An estimated 10,000 balloons will be launched, these balloons represent those, ?“still missing/unaccounted for?” from WWI, WWII, Korea, Vietnam and the Gulf Wars.
