Jail.... what jail?

You are kidding, right?

The jail is already under construction, despite what Broomfield officials are telling residents of this area. It will be completed long before the 2000 election. I highly doubt that ANY member of CVELG told you the repeal initiative is based on the jail issue. Broomfield officials seem to want to make that connection because so many people are tired of hearing about the jail. They hope that more people will ignore us if they think our initiative is about the jail. Now that you have joined those ranks, I can say only this?… Nice try!

The group to whom you are referring was called Citizens for Fair Decisions (CFFD) and was comprised mostly of Countryside residents. This group sought to convince Broomfield officials to find a more appropriate location for the jail. Although any location chosen around the Great Western Reservoir was considered unacceptable according to the CFFD charter, the current location was considered by some to be a fair compromise. After the final decision was made to build on this site, the group was disbanded.

We, the members of CVELG, began investigating the process by which Broomfield officials worked to form the combined city and county of Broomfield after members of CFFD brought the issues to our attention. We were appalled at what we found and continue to uncover. This repeal initiative is solely to allow all of us average citizens across the state to keep our local governments under control. We are here to remind them that they work for us. Allowing voters across the state to look at the truth behind the formation of the combined city and county of Broomfield will only give citizens the opportunity to decide was is truly best for Colorado. Voters will shape the development of their state. Somehow, I doubt this is too difficult for you to understand. Why do you insist on twisting our clear and honest intentions?

Is that the best you can do? That point was brought up many months ago and was only one of the first issues in a long chain of questionable and unethical behavior regarding the entire process to form the combined city and county of Broomfield. Of course businesses have a right to contribute to candidates and to issue campaigns. That is perfectly legal.

The question is whether the entire process is ethical. Under the new combined city and county of Broomfield, appointed officials would be in very unique positions to reward the corporations and land developers who funded the original campaign. This particular circle of favors clearly shocks the residents of Broomfield as was obvious when Mayor Berens had to demand order at a city council meeting a few months ago. The crowd erupted in gasps and angry cries when the campaign funding was brought to their attention. With ?“clever wording?” of the city and county charter, as Broomfield officials describe it, almost anything they do can be legal. If their actions do not benefit citizens and only appear to benefit corporations who have invested so much money in the county status, it seems to be a case of unethical politics. This is clearly not what is best for Colorado and I am sure the voters across our state will confirm this next year.
