Security Code is for Security!

Alternatives?

At some point, all of us are going to have to sell our homes, so why not address the logistics rather than just make attacks? As it is now, what are the alternatives for a seller who wants to make their home visible to legitimate buyers that may not be using realtors (which from my experience is not an insignificant percentage)? A previous posting on this site suggested opening the gates during weekend afternoons when homeowners are generally out and about and which is a prime time for househunting. Failing that, it seems (and the postings on this site support) that our general unaccessability may put sellers at a disadvantage with neighboring communities. Any thoughts?

Anonymous, if that's your real name ;-). You're right. I may sell my house some day. The difference between us apparently is that I'll refuse to post the security code on the front gate for every passerby to see.

And let's face it, posting the security code compromises security, a simple fact. It's irresponsible and somewhat selfish considering your actions may have a serious impact on the neighbors and friends you're leaving behind. While an incident isn't probable, the possibility still exists, no matter how remote. That said, common courtesy demands you consider your neighbors' security when trying to sell your house. At least that's what I think.

If this neighborhood had better security our homes would probably be worth more, anybody thinking about that?

Think about this scenario. Let's pretend we're driving around looking for a secure community to live in, and we drive down Highland and come to our beautiful gated community, it looks secure, nice homes, let's take a look. But wait, what is this? Someone has left the gate code on the front gate! Now ask yourself what's the first thing that comes to mind? Do you think, ''Wow, that's convenient, let's go look at houses!'' or do you think, ''Wow, security at this place is a joke?''

Let the people who drive around and look at houses come up to our gate, write down the name of the neighborhood and call their realtors.

I honestly don't care about a seller's disadvantages of living in a gated community. I find the advantages much more fulfilling.

I understand your prioriy is to sell your house and I appreciate that. I also want you to get a good price and I want it to be a good experience, for everyone. Please also consider that your priority represents only one of about 160 other families, most of which would probably prefer not to have the gate code posted for the entire city of Dallas to see.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: ''The safety of the residents who choose to stay far outweighs the convenience of those who choose to leave.''

Besides being inconsiderate, you are in violation of the Covenants and Restrictions for The Enclave at White Rock, Protective Covenant 7.5. You may erect a for sale on YOUR LOT, not on the common area. Be that as it may, you state, you are having an open house, so why not be considerate and post your NAME and let those interested call you for entry. I bet those who call for entry into the gated community to see your house will appreciate the added security.
