This comes from good friend and neighbor Bryce Willis:
1. If you suspect that you have roof damage and are capable of inspecting the roof yourself, do so before calling your insurance company. Some insurance companies have a "three strikes" clause; for example, if you call them three times about suspected or verified roof damage. they can drop you.
2. If you can't inspect the roof yourself, get a reputable contractor, such as one arranged through Lowes or Home Depot, to inspect the roof for you.
3. If roof damage is verified, THEN call the insurance company.
Remember, if you see one apparently bad or missing shingle, it has probably effected at least five more around it. Don't settle for spot repairs; most damage requires the replacement of much larger sections to insure a tight seal.
