Does anyone know why the 2000 and 2100 blocks have had the lanes narrowed?
And why was this done? What happens to the center of the street?
Answer from the City

Thank you for your recent comment on the City of Glendale?’s internet web page. The purpose of the striping modifications on Glenoaks Boulevard is to discourage speeding by narrowing down the travel lanes. Speeding has always been a major concern for the Glenoaks Canyon. Based on our engineering studies, speeds in excess of 45 mph have often been recorded in that section of the roadway. Narrowing the width of the travel lanes to approximately 10?’ to give motorists a more restrictive feeling is an effective traffic calming tool that has been utilized in many local jurisdictions including Glendale. We thank you for taking the time and bringing your concerns to our attention.

Sounds more like a unsafe situation to me.

Traffic ''Calming''

At a GOCHA Homeowners meeting tonight this issue was discussed. Apparently the lanes were painted to narrow the lanes and thereby slow traffic. It is called ''striping.'' The theory is that if drivers perceive narrower lanes, they will drive more carefully and thus more slowly. Have you noticed a difference? There is now a turn lane in the center of the street that some have found to be confusing. We are going to ask that the purpose of this center lane be clarified and report what we learn in an upcoming issue of ''The Echo.''

I've been wondering about this striping business also. Seems like it's much more dangerous. Stay in those 'lanes' and an opened car door is history. What if a child darts out from between parked cars? There's no room for error even if you're driving under the speed limit.
