Airmont Drive has become a short cut to get from Lorewood Grove Road to Hyetts Corner Road and the traffic is terrible!
There has been talk about closing off the southern entrance to Airmont Acres and having no through traffic. This has it's pros and cons but, look around, more and more neighborhoods have only one entrance and exit. This greatly reduces the traffic.
On the other hand, if with all of the new developements going in, if we want less traffic, we all might want to consider moving to Alaska...

Close Off Southern Entrance
I thought part of the reason we put up Stop Signs on Airmont Drive was to slow people down and to avoid closing off the Southern entrance. I don't know how many of our (Airmont) people use the Southern end, but I feel there are many. If this entrance is closed off, all of the (our) cars would have to come out on the North end, which could/will overload the Northern part of our development. I don't know what the answer is, but in my thinking, closing off this road to only one entrance is not the answer.

Closing of entrance
As one of the residents who live at this entrance,I daily witness the traffic that has steadily increased. More and more people are running this stop sign especially at night. Also for example :Two weeks ago,we witnessed a 10 car BMW sports car club run straight through to get to Lorewood Grove Rd. I feel that once the Vo-tech is built you will have increased bus/student traffic and then Whitehall, Bayberry and Winchelsea will contribute to traffic even though its a few years away. I FEAR for the children and residents crossing the intersection especially at dusk, not only due to car traffic but now we have individuals with ATV's buzzing around the development, which are not legal to be on streets -(adults that should know better but set bad examples for the children). While we would support the closing to stop the cut thru traffic - This would make the development much like Mt.Hope (one way in and out) and we do have the parallel road to use to get to Hyett and Jamison Crn Rds. My concern is : What happens (if we are successful) to the portion of the road that gets blocked off? As one of the residents impacted -I DO NOT want to have to worry about it becoming a teen hang out area or skateboard or ATV course. Much is to be considered and getting residents and Deldot to agree is a huge task. If the idea is not successful then possibly SPEED BUMPS as an alternative?

Close the southern entrance?
I am now of the opinion that we SHOULD close the south entrance. I was certain that we would not be able to get enough support to close the south entrance of Airmont, but now after talking to a few of my neighbors I am thinking that maybe there will be support. As posted earlier, I also have concerns about traffic increasing at the north end of the road, but it will only increase if there are more people going out the south entrance than there are cutting through. Maybe we need to do a traffic study to get this data. We could do it with a few volunteers posted at each entrance. A previous posting expressed concern that the closed road section could become a skateboard park or teen hangout. I am concerned also that it would become open space that the neighborhood association would have to pay to maintain. Before we propose closing the entrance, we have to have a plan. I think DelDOT can help us with that. I am planning to invite them to the next civic association meeting, which should be September 15.
