Detention Center Open House

Posted in: Country Side
Many of the participants on this discussion board have told me they'd like to have input on the site plan, appearance and operations of the City & County of Broomfield Detention and Police Training Center.

To facilitate that input, an open house has been scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 27, 2000. This open house will give area residents and other interested parties an opportunity to review and comment on the emerging plans for the City & County of Broomfield Detention and Police Training Center.

The event will be from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. in the Zang's Spur and Bal Swan conference rooms in the basement of the Broomfield Municipal Center, located at One DesCombes Drive.

Attendees will be able to comment on the building designs and site plans created by Anderson Mason Dale Architects and Roth + Sheppard Architects, the firms hired by the city to design the new facility. Comments on landscaping the area around the building are also being sought.

My staff and I will be available to answer any operational questions people may have about the new detention and police training center. Other city staff members will be present to answer questions from attendees.

Two additional meetings where interested citizens can provide input have been scheduled and will be advertised in the Broomfield Enterprise (Land Use Review Commission will review the site plans on 01/31/00 & site plan and schematic design will go to City Council for approval on 02/08/00).

To Mr. Hersee

Well I appreciate you "involing" us but its too late. Do you think we really care what it looks like?? I seriously doubt it. If this is the way BF is trying to make up for all the crap they put us through I want no part of it!

BF J Open House

I attended the open house last night. Yes, I still care about what they are building near my home.

I found the presentation well done, with good visuals. A very nice BF police officer took a good deal of time to answer and explain our every question!

Personally, I don't care what it looks like, but I know some people do - It's fairly innocuous in appearance with a contemporary geometry. If it had more windows it might be taken for a school or a library (that's my opinion).

I WAS interested in the security design, operations plans, and emergency response plans. Security and ops seem appropriate for this type facility. Some of the emergency response (ie full scale evacuation) are not completed yet - but, they say, will be by opening day.

My concerns are the same as they always have been:
1. There is still a likelihood that releasees with out rides will be put on RTD and transported through Countryside neighborhoods.
2. Work release inmates are VERY free to come and go. If sentencing to work release isn't strictly limited to non-violent criminals and people who don't break into homes for a living - I see the potential for problems to Countryside homes and residents.
3. In the "not to distant future", much of the area west of countryside is going to see developement. I am sad that this nice little suburban neighborhood will start to look like the Westminster Mall area.
