Vision for “One-Stop” Senior Center Becomes Reality
Bob Ross Senior Multi-Service Center grand opening scheduled for April 24
Finishing touches are underway on a 24,000-square foot facility that began four years ago with a vision to provide convenient access to services for seniors. Local and federal officials are scheduled to open the Bob Ross Senior Multi-Service Health and Resource Center, 2219 Babcock Rd., on Tuesday, April 24 at 10:00 a.m.
The grand opening will include a tour of the center and keynote address by Josefina Carbonell, Assistant Secretary for Aging with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
Named in honor of former City Councilman, the first chair of the City/County Joint Commission on Elderly Affairs and longtime senior advocate Bob Ross, the center will coordinate services from the City of San Antonio, Bexar County and several local service agencies to provide comprehensive assistance to seniors age 60 and older. Services will include case management, health and wellness, education, social and cultural activities as well as volunteer opportunities.
Area seniors provided input into the design of the Bob Ross Center, which is located in the Medical Center. Amenities include an exercise pool, workout room, computer lab, medical screening area, arts and crafts, reading and dining rooms.
The facility is the first to be built based on a 2003 recommendation by the City/ County Joint Commission on Elderly Affairs. Funding derived from a voter-approved City and Bexar County bond program and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. The commission recommended the development of four senior multi-service centers throughout Bexar County to serve as clearinghouses for services and information. Along with providing services, the goal is to also offer a venue for seniors to enjoy the companionship of their peers, recreational activities, nutritious meals and exercise.
