The Dosker Manor Resident Council was awarded a $100,000 grant from the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development to open a resident operated convenience-type grocery store. The Resident Council worked with SCORE and ElderServe SIT-UP staff in developing a business plan for the store. Space was renovated, equipment was purchased, vendors were located, a manager, clerks and stockpersons were hired and trained, and the store opened for business in February 2004. Residents have the convenience of shopping right at Dosker Manor, while other residents are able to suppliment their income by working in the store. The store carries a full line of convenience-type groceries, frozen foods, ice cream, snacks, milk, bread, fresh produce, greeting cards, and freshly made popcorn.
Residents have learned a great deal about what is required to operate a business. SCORE is again working with the Resident Council to make the store a successful business. Everyone in the community is invited to stop by Cafe Dosker Stop & Shop and check it out!
