Spring is just around the corner, and it's time to start thinking about getting out your bicycle, putting on your helmet, and getting some great outdoor exercise! The Mayor's Office and the Metro Council recently held a bicycle summit that brought together a coalition of bicycle groups and enthusiasts to give direction to Louisville's bicycle community. Education and safey were the two most important aspects of riding a bicycle in the Metro area.
1. A bicycle is a vehicle under Ky law and must obey all traffic rules.
2. A bicycle must stop at stop signs and stop lights.
3. The most important piece of safety equipment on a bicycle is a helmet.
4. Always ride with traffic and stay to the right, but not into the curb.
5. Always use hand signals when turning and don't think the cars will yield to you in traffic.
6. Ride defensively! Look up the road! Know what is happening around you!
7. Make sure your bicycle is safe, in good working order, with proper equipment--good brakes, tires pumped up, nothing loose or clothing flapping around which could get caught in the spokes.
