We are looking for suggestions for a solution to the traffic issues on Ola, between Bougainvillea and Linebaugh, especially in front of the school building itself.
Here are the biggest safety concerns:
1.) Parents dropping off students on Ola, causing the children to have to cross against oncoming traffic. This is child endangerment.
2.) Parents parking illegally on the right-of-ways -- both on the school side of thestreet as well as on the residents' side of the street -- blocking driveways, blocking crosswalks, blocking streets and blocking stop signs. (There have been 'No Parking" signs posted for at least a year.) Then when they have to back out onto Ola, it causes a traffic jam, plus endangers pedestrians.
3.) Parents pulling into the bus driveway (which is posted "Buses Only" between 7:30am - 8:15am, and 1:45pm - 2:30pm) and cutting in between the school busses.
4.) Speeding on Ola, especially between the church daycare and 103rd. (There are 15mph drop down speed signs posted at each end of Ola between Linebaugh and Bougainvillea.)
The car riders' line on School Street is much improved this year over the last few years. Most mornings the lanes are wide open for easy, efficient drop-off.
We just CAN'T WAIT until some pedestrian is maimed -- or worse -- before we figure out a way to make them safer. Short of having TPD there every single day at intake and dismissal, we can't enforce these rules/laws. Pperiodically there are Mobile Patrol volunteers present to help direct traffic, but even they can't be there every day.
How do we fix this problem? It obviously affects the neighborhood as well as the school.
How do we improve things for residents and students alike????
Somebody? ANYBODY??? Suggestions PLEASE!!!!
