Community is Missing

Posted in: Environment

Community is people sharing common interest.  People seem to only share a common interest when disaster or tragedy strikes.  The time to share is before disasters.  I know I need to put forth more effort to reach out when all is well.  During Hurricane Ike, I found time to visit neighbors to offer help.  I held more conversations daily.  After a few weeks life was  back to putting forth no effort for the community.  What is wrong?  Does anyone else know what I am trying to express?

  • Respect-O-Meter: Valued Neighbor

I do know what you mean.  It seems everyone is so busy that we all make little effort to stay in touch with our neighbors.  Now our children are carted out of our neighborhood to a central location for sports, etc.  In past years, our children played in our individual communities at school yards or community centers.  Now we seem to be separated from each other.

I am taking a step to bridge the gap.  I am writing notes and posting them so I do not forget to attend the next civic club meeting.  I will take with me a pen and paper to gather names and phone numbers.  My plan is to at least get familiar with the neighbors on my street this summer.  I feel good about this plan.
