Writers on the Avenue (WOTA) is a non-profit writing organization for regional authors and poets who are dedicated to encouraging each other in the art of writing, critiquing and sharing creative ideas, knowledge and marketing skills. WOTA meets the last Thursday of each month at 7:00 PM at Trinity Episcopal Church on the corner of Second Street and Walnut Avenue in downtown Muscatine, Iowa. A typical meeting includes a presentation or workshop on some aspect of writing and a sharing/critiquing session, in which participation is encouraged but not required. We encourage those interested in the art of writing to attend.
The Muscatine Branch of the American Pen Women organization founded WOTA in 1990. Since that time WOTA has published six anthologies with the assistance of cash grants from The Muscatine County Arts Council and area banks and businesses. WOTA has cosponsored annual creativity retreats, held near Burlington, IA, since 1998. WOTA also sponsored its first writing contest in the fall of 1999.
To see poetry and prose written by members (and friends, too!) of WOTA look in the Our Pages section.
Writers on the Avenue is open to any adults who wish to join the organization. Current members include persons of many diverse backgrounds and abilities. Annual dues of $10 help pay for mailing costs, occasional guest speakers, and miscellaneous expenses. You are invited to attend a meeting free of charge before deciding whether or not to join.
