MAIN STREET LIBRARY HUNTINGTON BEACH IS A SOUP KITCHEN FOR THE HOMELESS
POTENTIALLY AIDING CRIMINALS, SEX OFFENDERS, AND THE MENTALLY ILL
**A SAFETY & SECURITY ISSUE FOR OUR CHILDREN, HOMES, AND DOWNTOWN BUSINESS**
In the past few months, it appears that our neighborhood is suddenly frequented by an unusual amount of homeless people. Then we discovered Beach City Interfaith Services has been utilizing the Main Street Library to pass out food, clothing, & hygienic supplies on a daily basis to homeless people who are now loitering and living in our residential neighborhood. Some of the homeless are living in cars they have parked on Pecan Street, one being a white van and the other a white motor home/camper on Pecan Street. When the white van, Lic# 8484656, is chased from Pecan Street, the van and it's resident move to Acacia right across and down the street from the library which is deeper in the residential neighborhood. Others sleep in the grassy areas around the library building and walk our residential streets throughout the night, impacting Main, 5th, 6th, 7th, Pecan, and Acacia Streets. The lawns encompassing the library facility are always littered with empty beer & wine bottles, and human waste.

We haven't a clue if these people have criminal records or are sex offenders. This also presents an urgent matter of safety for the children that attend day camp at the Main St. Library. This soup kitchen, support, and aid to the homeless places our neighborhood children, our homes, and all of us at risk. Our neighborhood has become a "Mecca" for the homeless and unemployed. As tourists drive into town on Main Street, their first view of Downtown Surf City USA is the loitering of homeless people in and around the Main Street Library, not to mention how something like this affects our real estate values. None of the residents that live around this location were publicly notified by the city, that Beach City Interfaith Services was approved to operate such a business from the Pecan St. side of the Main Street Library. It didn't allow for any neighborhood debate, approval, or protest regarding a food bank for the homeless in our residential neighborhood. How is it that a religious organization is allowed to operate a soup kitchen out of a public owned governmental building? Is Beach City Interfaith Services operating with a legal permit as a food and clothing bank for the homeless, approved by the planning commission and city council with a notice served to the public? If so, when was this approved by the HB City Council and why weren't any of the homeowners in the adjacent neighborhoods notified of this decision? Is this organization required to provide extra security? Do they provide public restrooms for the homeless after they have eaten?  Shouldn't residents, property owners and taxpayers agree to sharing our yards and alleys with clients of this facility. This operation has a detrimental environmental impact on our lives as citizens of Huntington Beach. Under the California Real Estate Disclosure Act, all sellers in the surrounding residential areas will have to notify buyers of this food bank for the homeless. When the homeless leave Main Street Library, most other times, you can find them asleep early mornings on the tiered terracing of Pier Plaza. With the downward spiraling of the economy and growing unemployment, the City needs to examine viable alternatives - without delay!  ~Pass this on to all affected neighbors and friends~ PLEASE CONTACT CITY OFFICIALS AND EXPRESS YOUR OPINIONS AND CONCERNS BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE.
