RESIDENT'S PROFILE

Picture

Socioecomics of the Hood, an overview.

Although Fox Canyon has some pockets of highly educated, cultured and well-to-do people, the MAJORITY of homeowners and tenants are transiant in nature, as they get to Fox Canyon with the idea of moving-on to a better live elsewhere.

The permanent population is an ever-growing group of absentee landlords, disadvantaged, and challenged people. As is the case of children, the elderly, retired, disabled, single parents, and WORKING POOR, recently immigrated (il/legally) and/or REFUGEES.

Residents that in its generality lack the care or the knowledge, education, and sufficient or surplus financial resources to keep-up, maintain and support the expenses keeping a home.

Some of the residents lack American acculturation, in addition, to English language skills to permit them to have proper domain and knowledge of laws and City ordinances that control proper housing upkeep and improvements. In addition, to cultural traditions that govern good housekeeping and good neighborly relations, which promote the peace and quiet of the neighborhood.

City Heights in general and Fox Canyon in particular have a dense and diverce population. Within houses of each other, people speak nine different languages and come from fourteen different backgrounds.

DEMOGRAPHY:

Presently, Hispanics are the largest minority group forming the puzzle of Fox Canyon with a very strong presence of African-Americans. To that, we add a good measure of Somalians, Vietnamise, Etiopians, Eritreans, Hootus, Tootsies, Cambodians, Ethnic Chinese, Kosovars, Cubans, Dominicans, Haitians, and lately more than our share of resent arrivals from Central America and the homeless from downtown San Diego.

Spanish is the main language spoken in Fox Canyon followed by English, Arabic, Cantonese, Vietnamise, Cambodian, and many others languages, in lesser degree.

In its majority, Fox Canyon is a poor community. Poor in financial resources, but very rich in PRIDE, VOLUNTEER LABOR, RESPECT, and the resolve of its residents to come together and work for a better and improved community under the leadership of the Neighborhood Association.
