Franklinton

How low will Franklinton sink??

I just checked the calendar for local meetings and found NOTHING!! Looks like the moderators have even given up.

The McGarvey home has been razed (from what I hear) at 300 Dakota Ave. Two other houses on the same block are on the auction block. I am very familiar with one of the houses formerly owned by Bob and Jean King.... I would say "home" but it takes a family to make a house a home. When Bob and Jean lived there the house was a home....now the structure is waiting for a slumlord to take over which only puts the neighborhood in deeper peril.

Franklinton is the first settlement in Central Ohio, but it seems like nobody cares. Columbus needs to focus on it's roots preserve it's heritage!!

Does anybody reside in the "Bottoms" who really cares??

Hi Marc, Hope you are well. I like your comments about the historical significance of Franklinton, but I feel that there's no one around who is really concerned. Only someone who has read the history of the area and/or has a close connection to it's past through ancestry will care about it. I would assume that the majority of people living there now do not have a sense of connecting to the area because their roots  probably don't go back much more than 20-30 years. The people who did have  a sense of belonging have either died off or moved to more affluent areas. That's not very profound since I'm sure you can find the same attitude in any other historic section of any place in the country. When people have no investment in the area, it means nothing more than a place to live until they can afford to move to a nicer place. Sad but true.

I think you and I are the only people who read these forums. I hate to see the area going downhill. I was raised in Westerville and didn't even know Franklinton existed until 1970, when I met my former wife's grandparents. The house on Dakota Ave was deeded to her and I one and a half years before her grandfather passed away with the provision that he had a place to live out his years. "Pop" lived with us while I renovated the house but, sadly, he never spent another day there. The law of nature took Pop away and left me with only memories..... I feel the same has happened with the Bottoms and memories are all that I have. They say you can never go home again.

I had more to say, but the memory of Pop and my time on Dakota Ave has taken a toll and I will have to continue at a later date.

I registered just to say you're not the only one who reads. I appreciate the input from this board. My lease is up around spring time of next year and I was thinking of buying a place in Franklinton. I come to this site often to see if there is anything new and get neighborhood news. Thanks for posting Marc. Would you still recommend buying in Franklinton?
