15 Years of Street Scene… It just gets better every year!

Sep 10, 1998

It?’s 1984 and everyone is talking about whether the visions in George Orwell?’s book might actually come true. You just got a ticket to this new cutting edge street festival held in downtown San Diego. It?’s called Street Scene and although no one could have predicted it, it has become one of the state?’s largest three-day shows.

From two stages and five bands in 1984 to 14 stages and over 100 bands in 1998. From one square block to 25. From 3,000 people to close to 100,000 - how far Street Scene has come in 15 years. In 1984, maybe you were there to see Los Lobos, The Blasters or maybe even ?‘X.?’ This year holds the promise of Brian Setzer, Eric Burden (from War), Herbie Hancock, John Lee Hooker, and over 100 other venues, plus food from all regions of the globe.

Street Scene is - and always has been - about the music. "It?’s what people want?… it what people need. Music is the glue that keeps us all together," Street Scene Media Director Justin Shaw said. Variety has and always will be the spice of Street Scene. 1984 was music only, 1998 is an incredible medley of food, music, processions, festivals and most importantly, FUN!
