Dog Ordinance Update

Posted in: Graymoor-Devondale

The Government Administration committee held a special meeting on Monday to discuss additional changes to the proposed dangerous dog ordinance. The committee has worked to remove several amendments in the legislation that would have had unintended consequences.

The committee has removed stipulations making it illegal for beekeepers in Louisville Metro to own bees, required hunting dogs to be leashed while hunting, and requirements that newborn puppies be licensed.

The committee will continue to review the ordinance and plans to address questions regarding Breed Specific Language. Like many of my colleagues, I am concerned that breed specific language would not adequately solve our main concerns - and would be outdated within months of passage.

I will continue to work with council members to ensure that the final ordinance does not punish responsible dog owners, but instead focuses on owners of dangerous dogs. A final vote on this ordinance is expected before the end of the year.
