Spring is in full bloom! It’s the perfect weather for volunteering and it’s THE month to celebrate our Earth! Check out what our volunteers have been up to and how you can be a part of it in April!

We want to give a HUGE THANK YOU to every volunteer and partner organization that devoted their time and energy to keeping our waterways clean during Creek Week! You helped divert over 19,000 pounds of trash from our waterways, plant 300 livestakes, and marked 40 storm drains. We had a great turnout with 332 volunteers for The Big Spring Clean who made quite the impact in our community!

This month we’d like to highlight Tom G. as April’s Volunteer of the Month! Tom is a superstar volunteer who has been to nearly every CMSWS event for the past year and has truly had a great impact on our program. He has shared amazing incite on our Adopt-A-Site (tree maintenance) program and had been a huge help to our staff and other volunteers. Thanks for always putting your best foot forward in volunteering Tom!

Calling all students and residents in Mecklenburg County! Join us as we launch our Storm Drain Marking Competition! Join us as we launch our second annual Storm Drain Marking Competition! The competition will take place April 1st-30th, 2025, as groups from across the County help us get closer to meeting the goal of marking every storm drain in Mecklenburg County. For each drain marked, a group will receive a point. The top three groups with the most points per division (Under 18 or Above 18) will win some awesome prizes for each of their group members.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Storm Water Services can speak to your company, facility, organization or neighborhood group about volunteer opportunities, storm water pollution prevention, illicit discharges, and much more. If you would be interested in having CMSWS present to your group about any of those topics at an upcoming meeting or event, please contact STW-Volunteers@MeckNC.gov.

Every now any then we find a stream site in need of some TLC. This tributary of Stewart Creek along the Griers Grove Community is great opportunity for adoption through our Adopt-A-Stream program if you are looking for a challenge! In this program you would commit to cleaning this stream segment twice a year and you would receive a sign with your team’s name on it. If a onetime cleanup is better for your group, that’s an option too! If you have a group who is interested in tackling this stream and helping to remove litter, please email STW-Volunteers@MeckNC.gov for more details.
