Gulf Meadows Civic Club

Gulf Tree Lane has water barely moving on one side of the street as a temporary (?) solution to our rotting water pipes. Good breeding ground for mosquitoes. At least one of the neighbor's dogs starts barking at sunrise, runs loose and after passers-by on a daily basis. Several trash cans are stored in plain view. One corner is often barely passable due to all the vehicles parked on the street. One large commercial truck is parked in a driveway and another flatbed is parked on the street. One neighbor has shingles and other house parts literally falling off and it appears the mold is all that is keeping it from completely crumbling. This is only what you can see from the street. Backyards reveal rotting fences with the wood piled up. Probably explains the influx of possums. And rats? Call the civic association you say? Well the last call was questioning the schedule for the mosquitoe spraying and the response was ''Well mosquitoes will be mosquitoes'' :)or the other standard response is ''Come to the meetings and eat cake''. The entrance to the neighborhood leaves a lot to be desired, CJ's is a disgrace, the park could use some trees and lets not even discuss what happened to the swimming pool but we can, each of us, make a difference by keeping up our own property and keeping our vehicles on our property and off the street.

Thank you for using the Discussion Board that has been provided to you by the Civic Club.
I would like to respond to the statement ''Mosquitoes will be mosquitoes'' and ''come to the Civic Club meetings and eat cake''.
We have the community sprayed on a regular bases weekly and if we have a heavy rain in between it does no good. We cannot spray every yard and house in Gulf Meadows and yes, mosquitoes breed where there is standing water.
Now, as far a coming to the Civic Club meetings and eat cake. If you would call me and let me know who told you that I will speak to them myself. We have excellent speakers at our Civic Club meetings who keep us informed of all phases of the City. From Criminal Judges, Chief of Police, City of Houston Mayor, Fire Chief, Senior Citizens Assistance Director, Neighborhood Protection, etc. If you just knew how much of my time, energy and money goes into keeping Gulf Meadows a good community you would be surprised. Considering that it is free to you and to those who do not even pay thier Civic Club dues.
If you were at the November 2002 Civic Club meeting the Mayor was questioned about the water mains that were to be replaced in Sections II - III & IV. (FYI the contracts for bids were let on November 25, 2002 and that takes 30 days. As soon as City Council approves the bid, construction should start sometime in late January or early February 2003.)
There is no City Ordinance against a commercial vehicle being parked in a driveway unless it is blocking the sidewalk and then you can call HPD at 713.222.3131 and you can be anonymous there also. City of Houston Ordinance says that a vehicle can park on any street if it is moved every 24 hours, if that is the case with you then call 713.222.3131.
The Civic Club was instrumental in getting the City to fill in the old swimming pool property years ago when the Swimming Pool Association was not able to survive. The Gulf Meadows Swimming Pool Association was a seperate entity and not a part of the Civic Club, so we had no say as to what they did, as it was thier property. After many years of working with the City to get the abandoned property mowed, it has been sold to an individual who will now keep it mowed.
CJ's has been addressed and if you came to the Civic Club meetings you would be more informed.
There are people that complain about the neighborhood, but do not volunteer to help us in maintaing Gulf Meadows. As far as trees in the park, that is a GREAT idea, and I invite you to call me and I will appoint you Chairman of that Committee.
All complaints that we receive regarding abandoned vehicles, house conditions and etc. are turned over to Neighborhood Protection, City of Houston. (Of course if no one reports the addresses to us, we have no way of knowing.)
There are a handfull of people doing all of the WORK!!!!!!!!
Thank you for your input, but PLEASE next time call me or better yet come to the Civic Club meetings as that is the place to voice your opinions.
