HMCAI QUARTERLY MEETING SET FOR OCTOBER 15th

Oct 07, 2003

COUNCILWOMAN MARCIA JOHNSON MAIN SPEAKER

Because Councilwoman Marcia Johnson was unable to speak at our August 20th meeting, we?’ve invited her to be the main speaker at our general meeting on Wednesday, October 15th from 7 to 9 p.m. at St. Luke?’s Episcopal Church, 13th & Quebec. She will update us on political happenings within the city and discuss her committee work.

If repeal of Denver?’s Quick Wins Two remains on the November ballot, we will have representatives from both sides of the controversial referendum argue for/against the tougher zoning rules that went into effect last February.

And HMCAI board member Jonathan Lurie, contributor to this year?’s Blue Book, will review other ballot issues we?’ll be asked to vote on in November.

MARCIA JOHNSON is City Council representative for District 5. She is chair of the Public Amenities Committee and serves on the Blueprint Denver and Human Capital Agenda Committees. She also has the special assignment of City School Coordinating Committee.

The Public Amenities Committee includes Dept. of Parks & Recreation, Botanic Gardens, museums, Library, Denver Performing Arts Complex, Zoo, Theaters & Arenas Operations, and National Western Stock Show, among others.

The Blueprint Committee includes: Community Planning and Development, Blueprint Denver Plan, Neighborhood Plans, Zoning Map and Language Amendments, Transport- ation and Transit Planning, and Housing Issues, and others.

Human Capital Agenda Committee includes: Dept. of Human Services, Dept. of Envir-
onmental Health, Office of Human Rights and Community Relations, Denver Health Authority, Mayor?’s Office for Education and Children, Regional Air Quality Commission, and Office of Employee Assistance, among others.

Denver?’s Quick Wins Two is an ordinance regulating new construction in established neighborhoods such as Historic Montclair. It affects homeowners who want to add to their homes and buyers who ?“scrape off?” existing homes and build new ones. Its repeal may be voted on in Nov. if District Judge John Coughlin?’s ruling on Sept. 23 to halt the vote (because signatures obtained to put it on the ballot are invalid) is successfully appealed.

Quick Wins Two amended zoning rules to increase the open space requirement of a lot from 50% to 62.5%; it requires 60% of the lot?’s rear 35% be open space; and permits a larger house on the front 65% of the lot, but restricts the height of the house to 17 ft. on the rear 35%.
