Historic Montclair Community Assoc. Inc. (HMCAI)

WHAT IS THE HISTORIC MONTCLAIR COMMUNITY ASSOC. (HMCAI)?

Oct 07, 2003

We are the oldest neighborhood association in Denver, having been founded in 1907. At one time our boundaries stretched east to Yosemite, west almost to Colorado Blvd., and north into Park Hill. We shrank as the population swelled and political precincts were re-drawn and we?’re now bordered by Holly, Quebec, Sixth Ave. and Colfax. There is overlapping with Mayfair Neighbors to the west of Monaco.

Through our newsletters (at least four), flyers and public notices, we inform members about important neighborhood activities, zoning issues, meetings, elections, and projects. Officers and at-large board members serve without pay. HMCAI often joins forces with schools, churches and other neighborhood groups for the common good.

Over the years we?’ve promoted house tours, neighborhood watch, meet-the-candidates nights, tree plantings, picnics, Halloween parties and recycling. We helped build a solar greenhouse at Montclair School and assisted in leveling the land that is now Kitt-redge Park to make it suitable for football and soccer games. We opposed the conversion of Richthofen Castle into a B&B, presented numerous programs on crime prevention, worked to save the old Montclair School Annex at Quebec and 13th (now Stanley British Primary) from demolition, helped close down the notorious Huddle Inn, donated a bench to Montclair Park, raised money and recruited volunteers for Montclair School, and con-vinced the Denver Water Board that the fenced land above its reservoir at Quebec and East 11th Ave. would be ideal for football/soccer.

We campaigned for a new library, negotiated to get the Post Office relocated to its present site at 11th and Verbena, fought against the widening of Quebec and the re-striping of 8th Ave., sought to allay fears about the group home on 8th Ave., and were instrumental in getting funds for the renovation of the historic Molkery in Montclair Park.

We can boast of other achievements (too numerous to mention), but take the most pride in what we consider our greatest success ?– our hundreds of members. We hope you will become one of us ?– or renew your membership ?– just click on Become a Member on the front page of this website. We?’d love to have you join us in future campaigns, celebrations and other adventures.
