THIRSTY TREES

Oct 07, 2003

The drought damage to Historic Montclair?’s trees is obvious in too many yards and gardens in our beautiful neighborhood. If rain/snowfall is scant again this fall and winter, trees should watered deeply at least once a month through March. You?’ll need a fork, a soft spray wand, a soaker hose, or a needle to get the job done. (Available from hardware stores or garden centers.) Water within the drip area, but not close to the trunk, at from four to six spots around small trees, more around your larger deciduous trees or evergreens. Tree diameters and total time to water when using a fork, a needle or a soaker hose include 4?” ?– 20 minutes; 8?” ?– 40 minutes; 12?” ?– 60 minutes. Less time is required if you are using a wand.
