The Hawthorne Neighborhood Association (HNA) is an active neighborhood association whose mission is to improve the quality of life in the Hawthorne Neighborhood. HNA has roots back to the 1980's, when it was started under the name of "Island Park Neighborhood Association". Boundaries and leadership may have changed, but many of the faces remain the same and the HNA continues to be an active organization engaged with the community.
The Hawthorne Neighborhood is part of the Original Townsite of the City of Fargo. It contains a vibrant mix of housing types that radiate from the downtown commercial area and Island Park. The neighborhood population is 2,740 with 1,381 housing units served by the neighborhood association. Current membership is around 225 people.
The Hawthorne Neighborhood also includes a diverse mix of retail and businesses which range from restaurants and coffee shops to banking facilities. The Red River, which is the neighborhood's eastern border, offers outdoor recreation activities such as walking and biking trails, fishing, canoeing and kayaking. The river area also includes a dike, which is a popular snow sledding location, basketball courts and a skateboard park. Additional recreation spots include the public swimming pool and tennis courts in Island Park, and softball diamonds adjacent to the park.
