What?’s Happening?
Temperatures in the 90?’s, almost all of the dead winter leaves and growth is either blown away or pruned back?…the Bermuda grass is starting back along with most everything else?…May should be an interesting month for our neighborhood, with lots happening.

Westside Community Family Picnic
The Planning Committee for the 4th Annual Community Family Picnic--hosted by the Heatherbrae Neighborhood Association and Friends, on Saturday, May 12, 2007 at Holiday Park Recreation Center ?– 4530 N. 67th Avenue, from 10 am to 1 pm --.has made a lot of progress in organizing the event.

We have contacted the Phoenix Police, Parks, and many Neighborhood Services Departments who said they will participate. The Police will be helping defray some of the costs of the event as well as have officers and Commander Yahner of the Maryvale Precinct at the picnic to meet everyone. Trish Lenzner from Parks and her staff again have been outstanding in their cooperation with letting use the facilities of Holiday Park Recreation Area, including the pool, a DJ, supervised activities, and many canopies for the groups and agencies. Representatives from Recycling, Graffiti Busters, and Code Enforcement will be on hand to answer questions and pass out information.

Councilman Mattox has also generously donated his support for the event and has promised to show up to enjoy the festivities and say a few words.

The Holiday Park Chorus will be entertaining us, and the Heatherbrae Safety Patrol will once again attend and organize games for the kids. Students and staff from Desert Sands Middle School have agreed to help with the set-up and clean-up afterwards.

Some special information booths and activities, including door prizes, the fire department, horseshoes, playing favorite music (be sure to bring your favorite CD) are also planned.

The Boy and Cub Scout Troops from the Amigo Center will present the flag and lead the Pledge of Allegiance at the Opening Ceremony. Adult Education students from the Amigo Center English Classes will be helping with translations and inviting their friends to attend. We hope to have the radio broadcast system in use for simultaneous translation broadcasts. Please make a special effort to invite your Spanish speaking neighbors to attend. We are making bilingual flyers to advertise the event. If you would like some for you and your neighbors, call 623-846-7237.

We also still need more volunteers to help start setting up at 9 AM and help with the clean-up and take down after 1PM.

Since this is a Family Potluck Picnic, we ask each family attending to contribute a food dish to serve 8 to 10 people so we all share . Examples of food to bring are:
Chicken pieces, other meat dishes; Salads ?–such as Lettuce, Fruit or Vegetable types
And of course ?– DESSERTS!

Although we have water and juice available if you would like to bring your own non-alcoholic beverage, that?’s fine. We also will be providing hot dogs, chips, cookies, and paper ware.
