Looking out for our community
?“Neighborhood Watch?”program was designed to empower area residents to make their own blocks safer places by networking with their immediate neighbors. This concept was also the reason for celebration in the original designation of the first Tuesday in August as ?“National Night Out Against Crime?”.
San Antonio Police Department offers concerned residents a six-hour training course free of charge, to assist in organizing their own blocks. To formally organize a ?“Neighborhood Watch?” the training must be attended by one or more representative from at least half of the houses in the designated area.
Recently many Highland Park residents have expressed interest in forming ?“Neighborhood Watch?” groups but some hesitate to organize the first class within their blocks.
To make this a little easier, the HPNA directors decided in January to invite the San Antonio Police Department to provide the first two-hour class in the James Bode Community Center during our July meeting.
So whether you are planning to organize your own block and bring your neighbors with you to the meeting, or are just wanting to learn more about how to protect your own property, home, and community, come find out what ?“Neighborhood Watch?” is about!

Highlands Community Alliance invites all interested community members to join in the discussion with Cyndi Taylor of the Southside Chamber of Commerce and Robert Arizpe of San Antonio State Hospital Saturday, July 17, at 10 a.m.
in the clubhouse of the Highland Hills Apartments, 3003 Southcross. Social time with refreshments will precede the meeting at 9:30 a.m.

What?’s new at Brown?’s
Brown?’s Mexican Food recently changed ownership and, in addition to the traditional menu, offers a variety of seafood dishes.


Some true neighborhood heroes:

Ramon Quintero has been with Highland Park Neighborhood Association and Sunny Slope Neighborhood Association from the start, and implemented what later became known as the ?“Dial-a-Trailer?” program. He continues to supervise this program for HPNA. Last month we had our second of four Dial-a-Trailer events for this year, with 148 persons dropping off loads of unwanted items. In June he attended the Annual Neighborhood Conference. We appreciate your continued leadership, Ramon Quintero!

Jack Elder, more than any other HPNA member, has stepped up when needed this year! A single father and math teacher at Poe Middle School, Jack at first hesitated to be a director but agreed to represent school interests on the board. This year he not only continued to volunteer at Highland Park, but represented us at the Citizens Public Works Academy, Annual Neighborhood Conference and at other meetings as needed. When no one responded to my pleas for assistance in preparing the newsletter for mailing?—and it appeared that maybe it was an item no longer wanted by association members?—Jack agreed to accept that responsibility as well. We appreciate you being such a reliable neighbor in time of need, Jack Elder!
