Highland Park Neighborhood Association has for several years actively advocated for the City of San Antonio to ensure that this property be used as an asset to the community, either as a public space or as office for a not-for-profit organization of benefit to the community. HPNA members secured a grant several years ago, with the permission of the Fire Department, to turn the grounds into a fenced-in playground. The grant was awarded, but the Fire Department ultimately refused to sign the agreement.
HPNA was active in stopping the auction of the property several years ago following concern by bordering residents regarding a business which had offered $200,000 to open a service which caused them concerns.
HPNA has addressed this issue to four previous City Council representatives for District 3, and most recently discussed the issue with current City Councilwoman Jennifer Ramos July 12, 2008 during the HPNA monthly meeting.
The City of San Antonio staff will only agree that the site be secured and later sold at market value.
