Our Beautiful Neighborhood

Our Neighborhood contains a wonderful collection of fine custom homes that were built in the mid to late 1970's. What was once a cotton field is now one of the most sought-after neighborhoods in North Dallas. All you have to do is mention the Twin Lakes on Campbell Road and almost anyone will know where you are.

The residents of Highlands North are a wonderfully varied blend of people who have moved here from many different locations, both local and far away.

One of the focal points in our neighborhood are the Twin Lakes with their lovely lighted fountains that border Campbell Road. These beautiful lakes were originally cow ponds. The lakes were donated to the City of Dallas by the Highlands North developers. In 2003 the lakes were dredged and re-landscaped at a cost to the city of $450,000. The Dallas Parks Department provides some of the maintenance for the Twin Lakes, but association dues are also used to support & maintain the fountains, flower beds and other amenities.

Our official neighborhood logo is a duck, which is self-explanatory when you realize that as many as 60 ducks reside in each of our lakes. These ducks are fed daily, year round and during all kinds of weather, by kind-hearted homeowners. Injured and vulnerable ducks are rescued and cared for by neighborhood volunteers.

The homeowners association was formed in 1976 by a group of twenty-five concerned residents. Over the years, it has grown to a membership of over 500 families and offers a large array of benefits, services and activities.

The Executive Board of Directors of our association consists of a President, three Vice Presidents, a Secretary and a Treasurer. The association also has a number of Permanent Committees and Chairpersons.

HNHA Civic Activities

The Highlands North Homeowners Association has been successful in opposing the construction of multi-family units at the corner of Coit and McCallum, stopping the sale of the property on McCallum to a gun sale and practice range business, as well as negotiating with Target to ensure lighting and noise would not affect homeowners on Lauder and Cleary.

    HNHA Services

The membership dues that are collected each year are also used to provide services to our neighborhood community, such as the maintenance and beautification of common areas. The various services provided by the HNHA help protect all of our property values.

The Twin Lakes, four Landscaped Islands, four Landscaped Meanding Way Entrances and other Common Areas are centerpieces in our neighborhood. The landscaping and maintenance that they require is provided by the HNHA, such as:

  • Electricity & maintenance for the Fountains in the Twin Lakes
  • Funds to monitor and care for the ducks in the Twin Lakes
  • Planting & maintaining seasonal flowers and shrubs
  • Trimming ornamental shrubs & trees and keeping them healthy
  • Weekly mowing of all common areas
  • Watering & nurturing newly planted trees & shrubs

The HNHA is currently working with Richardson Parks to plan and install landscaping along the fence on Coit Rd.

Our homeowners association also assists in the development of Salado Park near Bowie Elementary and Prestonridge Trail along Meandering Way.

The HNHA has completed many "special projects" over the years that have added to the beauty and value of our neighborhood, such as planting trees along Campbell side medians, double street lights around Twin Lakes Park and live oak trees planted and maintained at Meandering Way entrances to our neighborhood.

We track Civic Information regarding events that could affect our neighborhood, such as proposed zoning changes, elections, etc.

The HNHA also provides liaison with the Dallas City Parks, Street and Sanitation Departments.

We also track information from the Dallas Neighborhood Alliance which is an organization of more than 60 homeowner associations working together in far north Dallas.
