Where?

Just out of curiousity, which side of 5th Ave. N. do you live on? Personally, I suppose it doesn't really matter. Goliath Davis resents that people still consider everything south of Central Ave. ''the southside''. Unless they change all the street names to North or drop the North and South on all of the street names (a rediculous idea)it will ALWAYS be considered South, since it is all south of Central Ave. It won't change anything about people's perception.
For what it's worth....

Ah!! You got me. I do live north of 5th. It, however, has nothing to do with my opinion. Anyone who knows me will tell you, that most of the work I've done in this neighborhood has been in(I guess) your area.
The problem Go has is the perception that all of the ''Southside'' is bad, when some of the best areas of the city are down there.

Don't worry, although....

....it is pretty disgusting. It shouldn't affect our application for historic designation in the slightest. It wouldn't change our neighborhood boundaries, it would only change whether we care considered part of ''Midtown'', which is an internal city thing, as I understand it, and all about politics. It, to me, is disgusting that ''Go'' Davis is acting like this all came out of requests from the neighborhoods involved. I have not seen ''Go'' at any of the HKNA meetings, have you? And Sandy was quoted in the paper as saying it was all news to him. This did not come from any of the neighborhoods involved. This is just a way for the city to include a wealthier neighborhood (us, frighteningly enough--we are better off than most of the demographic in the current ''midtown'' area) in the ''Midtown'' area, and thus take credit for bringing up the standard of living in Midtown (formerly, the ''challenge'' area). They can move around some lines on a map and--presto! chango! Looky here, our administration brought up the median income and assessed values of the homes in Midtown! Do we rock, or what? And looky here, businesses are moving to Midtown (more like to our area, as we become more and more attractive). And all by moving lines on a page. Meanwhile, the most severely depressed areas of the current Midtown area are not helped by this one bit. As far as I can see, HKNA won't be affected except that, as part of us will be in ''Midtown'' (below 5th) and part of us above (above 5th), it serves to further psychologically divide our neighborhood by 5th Ave North and this goes against what we've been trying to accomplish for years. Mercifully, this will NOT change the boundaries of Historic Kenwood, though, nor will it affect our historic designation. Whew.

I was alerted to the article by Sandy E. and then by Ingrid C. of Uptown, as they are both Wrice marchers and Andy Garr asked me to call a list of folks last night to tell them of a drug march tonight. As soon as I heard of the article, I jumped in the car and broke the sound barrier to get to my mom's and read her copy of the paper *LOL*! I had all kinds of terrible visions in my head of the city splitting up our neighborhood, etc. But once I actually read the article, it didn't seem that bad from our point of view. It is just angering the way ''Go'' is acting like this is emmanating from the residents, when really it is a cynical political move on the part of the administration to try to make themselves look like they have improved the economic conditions in Midtown, when they haven't done a darn thing except move lines on a map.

And thems my opinions on the matter. I sure hope I'm right that it wouldn't affect our historic designation or neighborhood boundaries. If I'm wrong and I get wind of it (and I will, as I have all kinds of windmills out on this one), ''Go'' can brace for a MAJOR fight. But I don't think he'll have to, as I truly don't think it makes a particle of difference to anything. Peace out.
