WHAT BIRDS HAVE YOU SEEN?

Posted in: Morningside Historic

I was delivering the hard paper flier's to the residences yesterday and while on Glen Park Avenue I saw my first SCARLET TANAGER ever!
I thought it was a joke, the red colors of the body were brighter than any of the colors I printed on the flier's. By the time I got my camera out of my pocket, he flew into a tree. A small red dot in a sea of new green.
During the winter I keep two bird feeders going: a loose variety seed feeder; a solid suet feeder. This year I decided to try a hummingbird feeder because other neighbors have said they regularly have hummingbirds. I haven't seen one yet, but the red liquid in one of the feeders has dropped a bit.

One neighbor described to me a bird: bright orange; yellow; black; about the size of a Robin. I told her it had to be a Baltimore
Oriole, but I haven't that one either.

What kinds of birds have you seen in the subdivision?

Joe, a neighbor across the street put up a hummingbird feeder a few weeks ago. I asked him if there was really hummingbirds in Gary and he said that last year they had a lot of them. I put up a feeder too, different style than Joe’s and nuttin but ants. So at his suggestion I sprayed down the pole with bug spray and tried again, nuttin again. While during that big fiasco of a yard sale there was one bird that kept trying to get at a bright orange silk flower incased in glass and water paperweight. I always thought that the colors were suppose to be red to attract the tiny things, but bright orange?? I noticed that Joe’s was yellow and red, mine are all red, so I went back to Lowes and bought a glass yellow and red one. Went to O’l Tyme Pottery bought some bright yellow silk roses with orange tips and VIOLA! I got hummingbirds. Tiny aren’t they!

I am happy to report that I have seen 3 hummingbirds at my feeder at the same time!

there are at least 5 hummingbirds now that feed at my feeders, i bought some friendly flowers for them as well.  hope to see more in the future.
