The Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute is seeking volunteers for a clinical research study on the prevention of lung cancer. Current and former smokers may participate in this study to determine whether a drug formerly used for asthma, Zileuton, can change precancerous tissue in the lungs back to normal. This project has been funded in whole or in part with Federal funds from the National Cancer Institute, National Institutes of Health, under contract No. NO1-CN-05022.
ELIGIBILITY: Current or former smokers,
35 years of age or older are eligible for the study. Individuals who have had a prior head,
neck, or lung cancer, regardless of smoking history or age are eligible.
COSTS/BENEFITS: There is no cost to participate.
LUNG CANCER: Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in both men and women. It is estimated that 173,770 new cases of the disease will be diagnosed, and 160,440 deaths will occur from the disease, in the United States in the year 2004.
